Description
Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle Coin (VF)
Among the rarest coins in American history are those gold coins which were struck before 1933. At the height of the Great Depression, the United States government collected all gold coins in circulation to melt down into gold bars. Today, Pre–1933 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagles are available from Pacific Gold and Diamond.
Coin Highlights:
- Individual coins ship in plastic flips, while multiples of 50 ship in plastic tubes.
- Contains .1209 oz of .900 gold.
- Issued with a face value of $2.50.
- Features iconic American imagery.
- Designed by Christian Gobrecht.
The first gold coins produced by the United States Mint went into circulation in 1795. America’s gold coin production took off following the discovery of gold in California in 1849. The Pre-1933 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle coins were struck by the Mint between 1840 and 1907.
At the time these coins were struck, the United States Mint was determined to maintain unity of design across all American coinage. As a result, these coins feature images with a shared design of the eagle coins of 1838 and the half-eagle coins of 1839. There are two slight variations in the design of Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle coins.
On the reverse side of each coin is the classic image of the heraldic eagle. In this depiction, the eagle is shown behind a shield with its wings spread for flight. In one talon it clutches the arrows of war, while the olive branch of peace is clutched in the other. The words “United States of America” are engraved around the design, with the face value engraved as “2 ½ D.”
The obverse side of these coins bears a refined image of Lady Liberty. Featured in left-profile relief, her hair is pinned back behind her head and the word “Liberty” is visible on her crown. The year of minting is inscribed below her bust, with 13 star encircling her image to represent the original colonies.
Each coin in this product listing is available in Very Fine, or VF, condition. A coin in VF condition shows some signs of wear on minor features, with the major features maintaining sharpness in detail.
