The animals of the Zodiac appear once each in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The last appearance of the Year of the Dog came in 2006, but this year’s celebration of the dog does not denote the same as in year’s past.

Chinese element theory holds that each Zodiac sign is associated with one of five elements: gold (as metal), wood, water, fire, and earth. The Year of the Dog may occur every five years, but the actual type of dog only appears every 60 years. The 2018 Year of the Dog celebrates the Earth Dog, which last appeared in 1958.
