The Independent State of Samoa has issued this giant coin to commemorate the 300-year anniversary of first contact between the Western world and Easter Island, one of the most isolated places on Earth. The coin’s incredible artwork features a multiple-layered approach that gives its imagery a three-dimensional feel, and its design celebrates multiple historical events, spiritual traditions, and cultural features of ancient Rapa Nui.

The reverse side presents compartmentalized scenes of Polynesian exploration, the carving of the great Moai statues, and European contact framed by reliefs of stylized Moai arranged like the spokes of a ship’s tiller. A pair of majestic Moai stand in the foreground with the inscriptions “Rapa Nui” and “300 Years” arranged at the center, surrounding a traditional symbol of the MANUTARA, the sacred “luck bird” worshiped by the ancient peoples of the island.

The obverse carries an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscription “SAMOA.” At bottom, it features a Samoan coat of arms and the further inscriptions “1 kg” and “Ag999,” confirming the coin’s weight and the quality of the silver.
