The coins of the Gold Libertad Series at the Mexican Mint have a unique coining history. The proof range did not debut with a familiar 1 oz gold coin, but instead issued a 1/2 oz gold coin. However, this 1989 release was the only Proof Gold Libertad issued that year and another would not appear until 2004. It wasn’t until 2005 that all five weights collectors are now familiar with were introduced in the series.

The obverse of 2022 Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins features the national coat of arms. Unlike the 1 oz gold coin, the 1/2 oz and other fractional-ounce coins in the series have only the modern coat of arms in the design element. This visual offers a glimpse of the Mexican golden eagle on a prickly pear cactus. The bird has its wings raised as it uses its talons and beak to battle a serpent. There is a wreath of oak and laurel below, with the nation of issue engraved above.

On the reverse side of 2022 1/2 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coins, you will find the image of Winged Victory. Based on the ancient Greek goddess Victoria, Winged Victory became an important symbol in Mexican during the independence movement. When the nation celebrated its centennial in 1921, this statue of Winged Victory was placed atop the new Mexican Independence Victory Column.
