One of the most widely–recognized dog breeds in the world is the sleek, swift, graceful and personable Dalmatian dog which is native to what today is the Republic of Croatia. An iconic breed in both history and popular culture, Dalmatians have been a symbol of canine excellence across the world for generations. That fact is commemorated by a joint project of the Croatian National Bank and the Croatian Mint, one of whose forms is the 2021 1/16 oz Croatia Gold Dalmatian Dog Coin now available from Pacific Gold and Diamond.

International recognition of the Dalmatian dog breed as autochthonous, or native, to Croatia, finally came from the Cynological Federation in 1994. The first written record comes from the 14th century, and the first unambiguous images come from the 16th century and formed the basis of the Federation’s recognition. The Dalmatian dog has been extraordinarily popular, by the standards of various succeeding eras, for hundreds of years and remains beloved to this day.
The 2021 Croatia Gold Dalmatian Dog Coin is a commemoration not only of the breed’s reputation, but also of Croatia’s identity as the origin point of these iconic dogs. Featuring a flawless finish and coming in its own protective case and themed box packaging that features the dog’s iconic spots, this coin comes fully insured by Pacific Gold and Diamond with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the governor of the Croatian National Bank.
The obverse artwork is dominated by that dual tribute to the Dalmatian and to the geography of Croatia, a sculpture from Nikola Vudrag that not only provides a gorgeous Dalmatian dog profile but also shapes its characteristic spots into the forms of Croatia’s offshore island. The backdrop is provided by a partial map of the mainland, stylized sea waves, and a coat of arms. It’s all accompanied by the Cyrillic inscription for “50 kuna” and the official national name “Republika Hravatska.”
The reverse features a pair of sitting and standing Dalmatians one before the other, joined by the inscriptions “2021,” “Dalmatinsiki Pas,” and “Canis Dalmaticus.”
