The American Gold Eagle coin debuted with a bullion and proof version in 1986. While the bullion coins have always been available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights, these fractional offerings were rolled out over time in the proof version.
Proof American Gold Eagle coins were introduced at first in the 1 oz version, with the first fractional weight arriving in the form of the 1/2 oz coin in 1987. The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins were made available starting in 1988 in proof.
American Gold Eagle coin mintage and demand have fluctuated wildly over the course of the coin’s history. When first introduced, the 1 oz American Gold Eagle was the most popular offering in the bullion collection. By the time the 2005 1 oz American Gold Eagle was released, the 1/10 oz bullion coin had actually surpassed the 1 oz coin in annual demand.
On the obverse of all American Gold Eagle coins you’ll find the image of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. He originally envisioned his design for use on an ultra-high-relief striking, but the US Mint lacked that technology in the early 20th century. Instead, his design was featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle circulation coin until 1933.
The reverse of the 2005 1 oz American Gold Eagle features the same design every year. Miley Busiek created an American bald eagle image that depicts a family of eagles around their nest, with hatchlings inside, a female standing guard, and a male flying overhead. Busiek’s image appears only on the American Gold Eagle.
Each 2005 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin in this listing is available in BU condition. Coins in BU condition have no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice minor flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the production process.
