Dating back to the debut of the series in 1967, the Krugerrands have lacked a face value in Rands, the official fiat currency of the Republic of South Africa.

This particular design of the Springbok antelope was created in 1947 by Coert Steynberg and originally featured on the reverse of South African five shillings coins and 50-cent coins in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.
