Originating with the royals associated with the House of Lancaster, the White Greyhound remains attached to the House of Tudor as it was King Henry VII brought the greyhound to this Royal Arms as a supporter of his badges. The White Greyhound of Richmond originated as a badge of John of Gaunt in the 14th century. John of Gaunt was the 1st Duke of Lancaster and served as a steward/earl for the Honor of Richmond. The greyhound was a favored dog breed in Northern England and often used in the Honor of Richmond as a supporter of the badge. The White Greyhound remained associated with the Honor of Richmond for the next century until Edmund Tudor was created Earl of Richmond. Edmund Tudor was the father of King Henry VII, victor in the Wars of the Roses and the first monarch in the House of Tudor.
