The Yale of Beaufort arms design comes to the British Royal Arms through Lady Margaret. The lady was the only heir of the Duke of Somerset, John Beaufort. Upon his death she took up the arms and carried them into her marriages, passing the Yale design on to her only child: the future King Henry VII.

This mythical beast is a goat- or antelope-like creature with the tusks of a boar and large, twisting horns. The symbol came to the Royal Arms when Lady Margaret passed them along to her son.

Lady Margaret was an influential figure in England during the Wars of the Roses in the 15^th century. The war pitted the House of Lancaster against the House of York initially but ended in 1485 when the Yorkist King Richard III was defeated in the Battle of Bosworth Field by Henry VII. He would go on to found the House of Tudor using his mother’s seal in his coat of arms.
