The 2013 release included a total of 42,675,000 coins, some of which were struck by the San Francisco Mint. When the United States Mint introduced the American Silver Eagle in 1986, the very first bullion coins in the collection were struck by the San Francisco Mint. In fact, production of the coins remained at the San Francisco Mint until 1998. After a two-year run at the Philadelphia Mint, the Silver Eagles were shifted again to their current production home at the West Point Mint.
All of the 2013 (S) American Silver Eagle Monster Boxes available in this listing include a total of 500 coins in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins are housed inside of mint tubes of 20 and feature a total of 25 tubes per Monster Box. It is important to note that these coins do not feature an “S” mint mark, the S is merely included to denote the coins were struck by the San Francisco Mint in 2013.
Supplemental production of the American Silver Eagle was required during the Great Recession to help the West Point Mint meet the intense demand for the coins. Starting in March 2011, the San Francisco Mint resumed coining of the bullion Silver Eagles to help meet demand.
On the obverse of 2013 (S) American Silver Eagles in this Monster Box is the image of Walking Liberty. Designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, it depicts Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon with her hand outstretched and the other carrying the branches of oak and laurel.
The reverse of all American Silver Eagle Coins features the heraldic eagle of the United States. Modernized for this series by John Mercanti, the heraldic eagle is America’s oldest coin design and has featured on various programs since 1795.
