90% Silver Barber Dimes For Sale ($100 FV, Circulated)
Charles E. Barber is one of the most prolific US Mint Chief Engravers ever to hold the position, designing a number of popular American circulation coin images during the course of his tenure from 1879 to 1917. Among his most popular designs were those in circulation from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Today, the 90% Silver Barber Dimes are available to purchase from Pacific Gold and Diamond.
Coin Highlights:
- Ships in a canvas bag containing 1,000 US Dimes.
- Face value of $.10 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
- Obverse features a right-profile portrait of Liberty.
- Reverse contains the face value and a wreath design.
- Both images from Charles E. Barber.
The 90% Silver Barber Dime features the fourth design ever used on American ten-cent pieces. Introduced in 1892 by the United States Mint, and designed by then-Chief Engraver Barber, these coins were in circulation in the US until 1916 when the Barber designs were replaced by the famed Mercury dimes from Adolph A. Weinman.
Barber’s obverse design featured the image of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath with a ribbon, and a headband that featured the inscription of “LIBERTY.” This design appeared on the obverse of the coins throughout its circulation cycle and was inspired by French coins of the period, as well as ancient Greek and Roman sculptures.
The reverse of all Barber Dimes used a simple wreath design that encompassed the outer rim of the reverse face and contained an engraving in the center of the coin’s face value. All Barber Dimes contain 90% silver content.
90% Silver Barber Dimes were produced by all four operational US Mint facilities of the period, and while it is rare for any one year’s release of a circulation coin to spark collector interest, there is one coin that stands out as a unique piece. The 1894-S Barber Dime from the San Francisco Mint saw just 24 coins minted, and only 9 are known to still exist today.
Each of the canvas bags available to you in this 90% Silver Barber Dime listing has a total face value of $100 (USD). This makes a total of 1,000 dimes in the bag, each with 90% silver content. The coins in this listing are considered average circulated, which indicates the design sets and engravings on the surface are significantly worn.
