Somalia Gold Elephant Coins started out as a 1 oz gold series issued on behalf of Zambia. From 1999 to 2003, the series was limited in terms of its mintage figures and options. With the transition to Somalia in 2004, the series continued to offer limited mintages and only 1 oz coins for several years.

However, starting in 2016, the Bavarian State Mint began to rapidly expand the series to meet the growing demand among investors for these gold coins.
