While the US Mint went through three different designs on this denomination in the first 45 years of availability, it would go through just five over the next 120 years. The Seated Liberty design was the longest-running design on the coin until 2017, at which point the Kennedy design became the longest-running image in the series.

The reverse side of 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars features a design of a modified presidential seal from Frank Gasparro. Based on the heraldic eagle of the United States, the design features the eagle with arrows in one talon, an olive branch in the other, and the US national heraldic shield on its chest.
